Buy it if

You want the smallest, lightest titanium case Boderry publishes, you prefer quartz accuracy to a mechanical rotor, and 20 mm straps are what you already own.

Skip it if

You want a mechanical movement or a dive rating. Boderry’s own automatic Voyager is a Seiko NH35 at 40 mm for $149.00, and the Admiral is rated to 200 m rather than 100 m.

The case, in the numbers that matter

Boderry publishes four case figures, and on a small watch all four do work:

  • 38 mm diameter — the narrowest case in the three Boderry models compared here, where the automatic Voyager and the Admiral are both 40 mm.
  • 10 mm thick — 2 mm thinner than the automatic Voyager and 3 mm thinner than the Admiral, which is the usual penalty for fitting a rotor.
  • 48 mm lug to lug — identical to the automatic Voyager despite the smaller case, and 1 mm shorter than the Admiral.
  • 56 g — including the nylon strap Boderry ships it on. That is 18 g under the automatic Voyager and 65 g under the Admiral.

The case is described as solid titanium, grade 2, sandblasted. Grade 2 is commercially pure titanium rather than an alloy; Boderry does not publish a surface hardness figure, so how the sandblasted finish holds up is not something the spec sheet answers.

Why does thickness matter more than diameter here?

Because a field watch is meant to disappear under a cuff. At 10 mm this is the thinnest of the three, and the quartz calibre is the reason — there is no automatic winding mechanism to accommodate.

The thinness is the trade the Voyager 38 makes, and it is the clearest reason to choose it over its own siblings.

The movement

Boderry names the calibre outright, which is more than many brands at this price do: a Swiss Ronda 6004D, described as two-hand with a small-seconds subdial and a date display. Naming the movement is what makes the claim checkable.

What Boderry does not publish is the battery life. Ronda states a figure for the calibre on its own site, but a movement maker’s datasheet is a different source from the watch maker’s, and this review does not carry figures across between companies. The cell reads TODO: verify.

Quartz or automatic at this price?

They are different propositions rather than better and worse. The Ronda calibre buys accuracy, thinness and 18 grams; the Seiko NH35 in Boderry’s automatic Voyager buys a mechanical movement and a sweeping seconds hand for $30 more and 2 mm more thickness. Neither choice is settled by a spec sheet.

Water resistance, crystal and lume

Boderry publishes 10 ATM, which is 100 m, and a sapphire crystal. Both are straightforward. Two adjacent details are not published and are worth naming:

  • Whether the crown screws down. Boderry does not say, and on a 100 m rating that detail carries real weight.
  • Whether the sapphire is anti-reflective coated, and on which face. The Admiral page specifies “Sapphire Crystal (anti-reflective)”; this page says only “Sapphire Crystal”.

The lume is listed as Swiss Super-LumiNova C1 without a grade, so it cannot be compared with the C3 Boderry specifies on the automatic Voyager beyond the colour designation.

How small does 38 mm actually wear on a field watch?

The diameter is only half the answer. Boderry publishes 48 mm lug to lug and 10 mm thick alongside the 38 mm case, and lug-to-lug is what decides whether a watch overhangs a narrow wrist. Those three figures together are what to measure against a watch you already own.

What is the difference between this and Boderry's automatic Voyager?

Movement and size. This one uses a Swiss Ronda 6004D quartz calibre in a 38 mm case at 56 g; the automatic Voyager uses a Seiko NH35 in a 40 mm case at 74 g with a 22 mm lug width and costs $149.00. Both are titanium and rated to 10 ATM.

Is 10 ATM enough for swimming?

Ten atmospheres is the figure Boderry publishes, which is the usual rating for surface swimming and showering rather than diving. Boderry does not state whether the crown screws down, and screw-down crowns are the detail that decides how much that rating is worth in practice.

How long does the battery last?

Boderry does not say. The movement maker publishes a service-interval figure for the 6004D calibre on its own site, but that is a different source from the watch maker and it is not carried across here. The cell in the table reads TODO verify until Boderry states a figure.
